What Counts As Licensed Work
The Contractors State License Board lists arbors, drainage, irrigation, landscape lighting, outdoor kitchens, patios, walkways, retaining walls, plants and sod, rainwater systems, water features, tree removal, stump removal and tree pruning above 15 feet. Pools need a C-53 license or a subcontractor who holds one. A permit or any workers on the job also calls for a license.
Your Checklist
- Check the license at cslb.ca.gov and make sure it fits the trade.
- Get at least three bids, and do not assume the lowest is best.
- Check references and recent jobs.
- Avoid cash, and never pay more than 10 percent or $1,000 down, whichever is less, unless a blanket bond is on the license record.
- Ask for proof of liability and workers compensation insurance.
What The Contract Should Say
Start and finish dates, plant types and counts, soil amendments, brand names on equipment, a utility check and permits before digging, supervision, cleanup and debris removal, and any follow up care or guarantee.
Questions We Hear
Does my mow and blow gardener need a license?
Generally no, if they maintain landscaping and are paid on a regular basis. They do if they add construction extras or repairs at $1,000 or more.
